Coronavirus drives boost in UK motorhome and caravan staycations

Caravan Overlooking A Beach

Along with several other aspects of our lives that Coronavirus has impacted, compared to the pre-pandemic era, the options for leisure travel and holidays are now looking quite different for many people. With international travel and quarantine restrictions making foreign trips ever-less appealing, many people in the UK are looking to staycations as the best bet for a safe, enjoyable and family-friendly break.

With more and more people deciding against trips abroad and taking a break within the UK, the freedoms, comfort and flexibility of caravan and motorhome holidays have led to a surge in the popularity of caravan park bookings this year.

National Caravan Council Study

Owing to the changes seen due to COVID-19, the National Caravan Council commissioned a study to see how attitudes are changing towards holidays within the UK, with a particular view to caravan and motorhome holidays. Their results showed that 64% of consumers say they are likely to go on trips in the UK in 2021, whereas just 38% claim to have been planning a UK holiday before the pandemic happened. That increase is clearly significant.

And while the first few months of lockdown saw many caravan and campsites close temporarily, demand for spaces has massively increased since lockdown was lifted. The Caravan and Motorhome Club have said it has been gaining up to 1,000 more members per week than it usually does. Even the recent introduction of the Government’s Rule of Six still allows couples, families or households to go away together while keeping within social distancing guidelines.

“Great holidays and fantastic adventures”

Chris Blackwell, Managing Director of Motorhome Department said, “Even with Coronavirus still around, many people are still wanting to take a well-earned holiday to get away from the stress and strain of it all. With overseas trips now more bothersome and also possibly more costly, lots of people are looking to caravan and motorhome holidays inside the UK. This has been reflected in the interest we’ve seen here at Motorhome Department, also from potential first-time buyers and a somewhat younger audience than we’d traditionally see.”

“When it comes to great holidays and fantastic adventures, the UK has a tremendous amount to offer and caravans and motorhomes are among the very best ways to make these memorable experiences possible.”
